Coral reefs can either be resistant, resilient or susceptible. Dr. VardhanPatankar, a DST-INSPIRE Faculty Fellow, affiliated with Centre for Wildlife Studies, is currently assessing reef resilience in the Andaman Islands to identify factors which help in reef resilience. His aim is to improve the management practices to protect resilient reefs which bounce back and revive even after a catastrophe rather than susceptible reefs which become rubble after either a natural or anthropogenic disaster.

Sedimentation is known to be an important factor in influencing the recovery of corals from large disturbances. Presently, ChetanaPurushotham, a Dakshin Foundation affiliate andalumnus of National Centre of Biological Sciences, is examining how sedimentation can influence patterns of coral structure and distribution at the community scale.
